- The Reawakening of Gim Gyung-hahk’s Faith
- 1 Still bewildered and without a sense of purpose, the disciples went everywhere in search of another teacher like Sahng-jeh-nim.
- 2 In February 1910, Gim Gyung-hahk returned home from traveling and found that his mother had just died from a sudden illness.
- 3 At first, he fell into despair and wailed mournfully. Then, he decided to pray to Sahng-jeh-nim and chant the Tae-eul Mantra. His aged mother soon returned to life.
- 4 From this, Gyung-hahk came to understand Sahng-jeh-nim’s words, “You will save many people with the Tae-eul Mantra.” From then on, whenever someone was sick, Gyung-hahk healed the person by chanting the mantra.
- The Beginning of Conveying Dao with
the Program for the University of Great Learning
- 5 Not long after he had revived his mother, Gyung-hahk cured Yu Ui-gyung, who had been suffering from typhoid fever, and guided him to have faith in Sahng-jeh-nim. They went to the medicine room in Gu-rit-gohl Village and stayed there for a few days.
- 6 There, Gyung-hahk noticed a cross cut into the wallpaper above the eastern doorway.
- 7 Peeling off the paper, he found four Chinese characters that read, “Follow the mandate. Open the teaching (奉命開訓).”
- 8 Gyung-hahk examined the room and found another cross cut into the wallpaper.
- 9 He peeled off the paper and found the Chinese character sun (日). It was about a foot tall.
- 10 Ui-gyung returned home, and that night, when he offered a bowl of fresh water and chanted the Tae-eul Mantra, his spiritual eye opened. When word spread of the miracles that followed, many people received the teachings.
- 11 It became widely known that chanting the Tae-eul Mantra endowed one with power from the spirits, and the mantra became the means of conveying dao.
- 12 From then on, the disciples meditated with the Tae-eul Mantra.
- 13 This was the realization of Sahng-jeh-nim’s words, “I will establish the Center for Great Learning at Gyung-hahk’s house. This school will flourish.”
