• Concern for Followers’ Intentions and Faith
  • Often, when the disciples gathered at the center for a chee-sung, they greeted each other, made introductions, and then sat around chatting about current events.
  • Tae-mo-nim would chastise them for this. “You! You’re not chanting the mantras, and you’re talking that nonsense again!”
  • She would then strike each of them with Her pipe, regardless of age and social status. It was said that being struck by Her pipe was more painful than being struck by lightning.
  • But no matter how hard they were hit, they were never injured. Tae-mo-nim struck the disciples so often they eventually decided to stop their chatter and be more earnest in chanting the mantras.
  • Even after this, if Tae-mo-nim came while they were chanting, they would sweat profusely, fearful of Tae-mo-nim and Her pipe, and they would chant louder.
  • Once, She yelled, “You rogues, what good is it if you don’t cultivate your minds and simply open your mouths and make loud noises like frogs?” Then, She struck their heads again. The disciples did not know what to do.
  • Frequently, Tae-mo-nim would say of a disciple, “Though he is dressed in bright clothes, he is dark on the inside.”
  • She expected disciples to think about how the Later Heaven would be and wanted them to study with the right mindset. She always worried about falseness in the disciples’ intentions and how they approached their faith.
