  • Sahng-jeh-nim spoke respectfully to everyone, even those considered to be of low birth.
  • Hyung-yul’s servants, Jee Nahm-shik and Euh-rung, were no exceptions. Hyung-yul once protested, “They are my servants. Please do not speak to them with such respect.”
  • “They are your servants,” Sahng-jeh-nim said, “but they have no such relationship with Me.
  • From now on, respect people of low birth. Because you have lived in this village since youth, it may be difficult to change the way you speak here. But, at least, when you are elsewhere, be sure to speak respectfully to whomever you meet.
  • In the days to come, there will be no distinction between legitimate children and those born of concubines, or between the nobility and people of low birth. Looking for nobility in blood is like scraping out the bones of your ancestors.”
  • To Euh-rung, Sahng-jeh-nim once said,
  • “Do you think the sky has boundaries? Even if you travel ten thousand lee to some far away land, you will see the same sky. It has no boundaries.
  • I am turning heaven and earth upside down so that all may live in harmony and no one will distinguish between your children and mine.
  • Do not lament your lot as a servant. If you have a sincere mind, all will be well.”
