• From Goon-sahn to Seoul by Ship
  • As Sahng-jeh-nim and the others set out for Goon-sahn, He had Gim Byung-sun recite:
  • 永世花長乾坤位 大方日明艮兌宮
  • When Gun () and Gohn () take their proper positions,
the flower of eternal peace blooms.
When Gahn () and Tae () take their proper positions,
all lands are filled with brightness.
  • When they arrived in Goon-sahn, Sahng-jeh-nim asked the disciples, “Which is better, calming the wind or letting it blow?”
  • “It is better to let the wind blow,” Gim Gwahng-chahn answered.
  • Before they boarded the ship, Sahng-jeh-nim told the disciples, “Prepare a smoked prune for each person.”
  • A strong wind blew and the ship was violently tossed about on the waves. The disciples got seasick. Sahng-jeh-nim had them put the prunes in their mouths to ease the nausea.
  • He took the lenses from the eyeglasses, rolled the paper into a point, and with it pricked the inside of His nostril, making His nose bleed. He coated the lenses with the blood and wrapped them up again.
  • He then gave this to Gim Gahp-chil. “Throw this toward the north, into the sea.”
  • Gahp-chil went out on deck and hesitated, unable to decide on the direction. Sahng-jeh-nim called him back and asked, “Why did you not throw it immediately?”
  • 10 “I do not know which way is north,” Gahp-chil answered.
  • 11 “Throw it toward the direction of the lightning,” said Sahng-jeh-nim.
  • 12 Gahp-chil again went on deck and looked around. When lightning suddenly flashed, he threw it toward that direction.
  • 13 The next day, they arrived at the port in Incheon and took the train to Seoul. Sahng-jeh-nim said to the disciples, “All of you, refrain from smoking.”
  • 14 Accompanied by Gwahng-chahn, Sahng-jeh-nim went to Gim Yung-sun’s house near Hwahng Bridge. Yung-sun was Gwahng-chahn’s younger cousin.
