- 1 Due to a growing shortage of food, Hyung-yul dreaded receiving visitors.
- 2 Sahng-jeh-nim said to him, “People should come.
- 3 It is said, ‘When you open your gates to receive visitors, expect people (開門納客 其數其然).’”
- 4 One day, Sahng-jeh-nim consoled Hyung-yul about his struggle to manage the burdensome household, reading him a verse:
- 弊衣多垢勝金甲
頹屋無垣似鐵城
- 5 Tattered and dirty clothes
are better than golden armor.
A dilapidated house without a fence
is like an iron fortress.
