• Having Two Minds
  • After becoming a disciple of Sahng-jeh-nim, Bahk Gohng-ooh, who used to be a local Il-jin Association leader,
  • secretly visited the association’s office on some business.
  • Knowing this, Sahng-jeh-nim later said, “Be careful. The bodies of those with two minds will split, and the necks of those with two loads on one shoulder will break.”
  • This surprised Gohng-ooh, and from then on he did nothing in secret. He severed ties with the association once and for all.
  • Only the Mind Matters
  • Because the other disciples had long hair, Gohng-ooh felt ill at ease with his short haircut.
  • In a few months, he managed to grow his hair long enough to tie in a small topknot so that he could wear a gaht.
  • Passing through Geum-gu Township one day, he encountered more than a dozen of his old comrades from the Il-jin Association. They laughed at Gohng-ooh’s hair, then seized him and cut it short.
  • Feeling that he could not leave his house until his hair grew back, Gohng-ooh stayed at home. After two months passed, Sahng-jeh-nim unexpectedly came to ask Gohng-ooh why he had been absent for so long.
  • Gohng-ooh ashamedly explained his encounter with the members of the Il-jin Association.
  • 10 “Embarrassed to see You with my hair so short, I planned to visit only after it was long enough to wear a gaht,” said Gohng-ooh.
  • 11 “I see only your mind,” Sahng-jeh-nim said. “I am not concerned with your hair.” He then took Gohng-ooh to Gu-rit-gohl Village.
