• Now Is the Time for the Resolution of Bitterness and Grief
  • Accompanied by Gohng-ooh, Sahng-jeh-nim visited an inn on Doh-chahng Hill. In a very respectful manner, Sahng-jeh-nim ordered rice wine.
  • He then said to Gohng-ooh, “Order some wine for yourself.” Gohng-ooh ordered the wine, speaking as he normally would to someone serving him.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim remarked, “Now is the time for the resolution of bitterness and grief.
  • The good fortune of people of low birth is coming. High birth or low birth, esteemed or base occupation, such distinctions must be done away with for a better world to arrive soon. From now on, you should refrain from speaking that way.”
  • Reflect on Your Faults and Repent
  • Hyung-yul, on his way home one day, was attacked by a Christian named Gahng Joong-gu, who had been drinking. After hearing Hyung-yul tell the story,
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said, “With a bowl of fresh water before you, reflect on your own faults and repent.”
  • Hyung-yul did as he was told and later heard the Christian had fallen ill, almost died, and then just barely recovered.
  • When Hyung-yul spoke of this, Sahng-jeh-nim said, “If something like that ever happens to you again, do not bear a grudge against the assailant.
  • 10 Instead, reflect on your own actions, and you will be relieved of whatever wrong you have done. If you have done nothing wrong, the poisonous energy will return to where it came from.”
  • Gohng-ooh’s Temperament Softens
  • 11 While staying in Dae-heung Village, Sahng-jeh-nim asked Gohng-ooh, “Do you often get into fights?”
    “Yes, I do.”
  • 12 “You enjoy fighting because you have the nature of a leopard. Now, I replace it with the nature of a human.”
  • 13 From then on, Gohng-ooh’s temperament softened, and he did not want to fight. If he came across someone ready to fight, he became afraid and stayed clear.
