• Releasing Hwahng Sook-gyung from Debt
  • On August 27, Sahng-jeh-nim walked to Hwahng Sook-gyung’s house in Mahn-joong Village, Ik-sahn County.
  • As He neared the house, He saw someone slam the gate in anger so hard that the wall fell down. Rather than staying there, Sahng-jeh-nim went to Jung Choon-shim’s house in the same village.
  • Sook-gyung owed a long-standing debt to a man in Yohng-ahm Village.
  • After the creditor’s death, his son sent a messenger to collect the money owed. The messenger threatened to notify the police and have Sook-gyung imprisoned unless he repaid the money.
  • That night, Sook-gyung and his son visited Sahng-jeh-nim to explain their predicament and implored Him to solve the problem.
  • Sahng-jeh-nim said, “Because the wall in front of your house fell down, this matter will be settled.” He then told Sook-gyung to buy a new hat and some cotton fabric. The fabric was made into attire for Sahng-jeh-nim.
  • Wearing the hat and attire, Sahng-jeh-nim assured Sook-gyung, “Do not worry. The matter will be resolved smoothly. This cotton will reconcile the creditor and the debtor.”
  • Later, the policeman who came to arrest Sook-gyung agreed to go with him to the creditor’s house to ask for more time to pay the debt, but the son refused.
  • The creditor’s widow, however, chastised her son, “That man was a friend of your late father. You would be no more than a brute if you had him put in jail.” The mother tore the deed from her son’s hand and burned it.
  • 10 The son had no choice but to apologize to Sook-gyung and drop the charge against him, releasing him from debt.
