• The Bier Is Carried to Gaeng-mahng Village
  • With that day gone, the next morning they prepared to set out again. They were supposed to take the sacred remains to Go-bu County to the house of Sahng-jeh-nim’s parents.
  • They placed the coffin back on the bier. Hyung-yul knocked on the bier and said, “The situation is sorrowful, but what can we do?”
  • To Ho-yun, he said, “I will use the qi of the character doh from the name Doh-yohng. Doh-yohng, come here.” He sat Ho-yun on one of the front carrying poles.
  • Sixteen men carried the bier, eight on each side. A group of disciples and other people followed. At the front of the group, one person carried a funeral banner that read: “Role of the West Spirit in Ho-nahm.” Among the group, someone carried a wooden placard on which was written the character ah (亞); another person carried what looked like a large wooden fan, on which there was a picture of clouds; and someone else carried a hemp cloth with which to wipe the coffin.
  • The funeral banners blowing in the wind looked like waves. The procession grew longer as it went, and many came out of their houses to watch as it passed.
  • The people of each village brought out large pots of alcohol and used them to make spiritual offerings in which they bowed to Sahng-jeh-nim. All lamented His death, saying, “How sorrowful. It is a pity that He had to leave this world.”
  • When the bier was passing through Nae-ju-pyung Village, Sahng-jeh-nim yelled, “How can you stand there like stiff wooden statues when My corpse is being carried in front of you?” With this, branches broke off from the trees that lined the road.
  • People witnessing this were astonished, and someone said, “How could such healthy trees break like that?”
  • 10 When the procession arrived in Go-bu County, everyone came out to receive them. A spiritual offering with dog meat and alcohol was made. The people bowed to Sahng-jeh-nim and mourned His death.
  • 11 When the procession arrived at the house, the pallbearers lowered and then lifted the bier as a farewell to Sahng-jeh-nim’s parents. By the time they returned to Gu-rit-gohl Village, the day had already passed.
  • 12 On the following day, a temporary grave was made next to the bamboo grove behind Hyung-yul’s house.
  • Watching Over Sahng-jeh-nim’s Sacred Body
  • 13 Constant watch was kept over Sahng-jeh-nim’s temporary grave―usually by Gim Hyung-yul, Baek Bohng-nahm, Gim Ja-Hyun, Gim Gahp-chil, and Bahk Gohng-ooh―until His final burial on Jahng-tae Hillock.
