- Tae-mo-nim’s Life Before Meeting Sahng-jeh-nim
- 1 Tae-mo-nim’s surname was Go (高), and Her given name was Pahl-lyeh (判禮). She was of the Go family whose ancestors came from Jahng-taek County.
- 2 She was born in the Hour of the Ox on March 26, 1880 (the Year of the Dragon, Gyung-jin, DG 10) in Doh Village, which lies in Dahm-yahng County of Jul-la Province.
- 3 Her father’s name was Go Duk-sahm, and Her mother’s family name was Bahk. Tae-mo-nim’s father and mother are honored as Sacred Father and Sacred Mother.
- 4 In May 1879, the Sacred Mother stayed at a Buddhist temple to pray.
- 5 One night, she dreamed of hiking up a high mountain to a grand house; inside the house, an immortal gave her two books, one red and the other yellow. Surprised, she awoke.
- 6 Not long after this, she conceived Tae-mo-nim.
- 7 When Tae-mo-nim was six years old, the Sacred Father died, and She and the Sacred Mother went to live with the Sacred Mother’s maternal grandparents, the Sohngs. Though Tae-mo-nim was young, one of the men in that family, who was a monk, taught Her to meditate.
- 8 When She was nine, She and Her mother moved to Dae-heung Village to live with Her mother’s sister.
- 9 The aunt’s husband, Cha Chee-gu, introduced Her to Eastern Learning, and She became a follower.
- 10 When She was fifteen, She married into the Shin family upon Her aunt’s advice and several years later gave birth to a daughter. In June 1907, after thirteen years of marriage, She was widowed.
