- Bestowing the Mindset for Gae-byuk
- 1 In Hwey-sun Village, in August 1905, Sahng-jeh-nim opened the gate of the spirit world and conducted a work of renewal.
- 2 One day, during the work, He explained that He would read a poem He had written in His childhood. He had the disciples sit in front of Him in rows and said, “Set your minds right and stay alert.” He then recited:
- 3 When carrying a heavy stone,
how could you say that the mountain is distant?
With a well-crafted club the world is leveled;
an old tree meets autumn.
- 4 “This is the civilization of teachers,” Sahng-jeh-nim said. “Repeat this in your minds to receive these verses.”
- 5 After the disciples did so, Sahng-jeh-nim continued:
- 霜心玄圃淸寒菊 石骨靑山瘦落秋
- A clear, cold chrysanthemum in a black, frozen field.
Fallen autumn leaves cover the ground
on a once-verdant mountain, now bony rock.
- 6 “This is the civilization of ancestors,” Sahng-jeh-nim said. “Repeat this in your minds to receive these verses.”
- 7 After the disciples did so, Sahng-jeh-nim continued:
- 千里湖程孤棹遠 萬邦春氣一筐圓
- Alone, I row across a lake one thousand lee.
A bamboo basket is filled to the brim
with the qi of spring from ten thousand lands.
- 8 “This is the civilization of kings,” Sahng-jeh-nim said. “Repeat this in your minds to receive these verses.”
- 9 After the disciples did so, Sahng-jeh-nim continued:
- 時節花明三月雨 風流酒洗百年塵
- Spring flowers bloom in the March rain.
Poong-nyu wine washes away a hundred years’ dust.
- 10 “This is the civilization uniting the virtue of teachers, ancestors, and kings,” Sahng-jeh-nim said. “Repeat this in your minds to receive these verses.”
- 11 After the disciples did so, Sahng-jeh-nim continued:
- 風霜閱歷誰知己 湖海浮遊我得顔
驅情萬里山河友 供德千門日月妻
- Who could comprehend My odyssey of hardships?
I float on the cosmic sea of creative change,
and My face is revealed.
I spread love ten thousand lee,
all mountains and rivers become My friends.
I bestow virtue upon a thousand doors,
sun and moon become My bride.
- 12 “This is our great work of autumn through which the true meaning of life is gained,” Sahng-jeh-nim said. “Repeat this in your minds to receive these verses.”
