• A Ritual for Rain
  • On April 8, 1926, Tae-mo-nim said to the disciples, “With this year’s terrible drought, farming will be impossible unless I provide rain. Get your musical instruments!”
  • She told them to perform a ritual with music and dance and said, “We need a venerable farmer to sing ‘The Farmer’s Song.’”
  • As She said this, Gahng Hwee-mahn walked through the gate.
  • She wrapped a towel around his head and told him to chant the Shee-chun-ju Mantra three times. He did this and then sang “The Farmer’s Song.”
  • Tae-mo-nim said, “A farmer should get wet in the rain.” Then, She splashed water over Hwee-mahn and the others, soaking them.
  • Before sending them home, She said, “Go and close the irrigation dams in your rice fields. If you fail to take advantage of this rainfall to transplant the seedlings, the rice paddies will be useless.” Everyone hurriedly returned to their fields and dammed up their rice paddies.
  • The next day, it rained heavily, allowing them to transplant the seedlings.
  • Thereafter, whenever there was a severe dry spell, Tae-mo-nim performed a work of renewal for rain. By July, She had done so seven times.
